Making Bread and Tasty Tuesday Linkup #53

I’ll bet you after reading this post you will want to switch to making bread at home from scratch – it is SO much easier than you think!

Making Bread is Easier Than You Think!

In my family making bread at home was not even a question. It was a given. My grandmother always made her own bread, we pretty much never bought it unless there was a huge family gathering and we had no time for making bread in the quantities we needed.

Well, I wish my grandmother had access to the Internet back in the day – that problem would have been solved in a heart beat!

I’ve always wanted to try making bread but I kind of always been intimidated by the process. My childhood memories told me it was a lengthy process requiring a lot of skill, knowledge and wisdom (“Oh it takes years to learn and master”). Little did I know…

So you know how if someone tells you “Noooo, you can’t do it, it’s too hard”, eventually all you can think about is doing it? Yep. That’s what happened to me and making bread. I ended up obsessing about trying to make my own.

This past weekend I decided I was going to try making bread from scratch – no bread makers, no nothing. Just me vs. making bread 🙂

You might be wondering why would someone want to make bread at home if they can buy it at the store? So here’s the thing, guys. Here are the ingredients of your typical bread of a popular brand you get at the store:

Say whaaaaaat?!!

And here’s what you need for making bread at home:

  • Flour of choice
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Yeast

That. Is. It.

So let’s move on to the idea of making bread at home being a super complicated and long process.

This past weekend I made 3 loaves of bread – one on Saturday night, and two on Sunday morning from the refrigerated dough (!!!) that can last in your fridge for a few days.

“Say whaaaaat?”, right? 🙂

Are you intrigued?

Then you need to head over to Amazon and buy this book by Jeff Hertzberg, M.D. and Zoë François: Healthy Bread in 5 Minutes a Day just like I did.

If you can’t wait to get that book from Amazon and want to start making bread tonight, head over to their blog and check out this recipe I used for making bread you saw in pictures above. That recipe is from their book “The New Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day”.

While you’re there on Amazon, pick up this Danish dough whisk to mix your dough to perfection. If you’re serious about making bread, you can get a baking stone there, too. Otherwise just use the pizza pan like I did.

I mean, come on, it was the very first loaf of bread I made in my life and it turned out like this:

If I can do it, so can you. I’m not even a good baker, to be honest with you, and look how well I did! You’ve got to tell your friends about this:

My husband spent quite a few years working at the Pelican Inn making bread every day. He knows his bread VERY well. And he absolutely loved this bread I made. So don’t be intimidated and give it a try – you’ll never buy your bread again.

Your turn, guys! Tell me and A Hungry Runner what happened on the food front lately!
