Hey guys! Happy Easter! I hope you had a wonderful holiday with your loved ones.

We ran on Easter Sunday πŸ™‚

running

My very first run of the season and we went as far as 3.10 miles! I’m stoked about that and super sore today πŸ™‚ But hey, the weather was perfect and it sure didn’t feel like that much of work to run a 5K πŸ™‚

So back to the stuff you and I usually talk about on Tuesdays… As you might have noticed from the title – we’re starting another Whole30!

My very first Whole30 went very well and I’ve been contemplating another one lately because, let’s face it – I’ve fallen off the wagon here a little bit, and it is time to get back on it.

The first time around it was hard because my family wasn’t entirely on board with me. Now, don’t you even dream about getting my kids on board this or any other time around πŸ™‚ But this time my hubby is going all in with me! Between the two of us cooking and buying groceries, we’re planning on sneaking the Whole30 on the kids without them ever noticing. How’s that for an evil plan? πŸ™‚

So after doing my first Whole30 last summer I’ve learned a few tricks and tips to help me (and you if you’re starting Whole30) stay on track and not quit in the first week πŸ™‚

Here they are.

Starting Whole30 – How NOT to Fail

{ONE} Plan

You have to have a plan so you have something to stick to. The Whole30 website and support forum sure do provide a lot of help and support, but you need your own plan tailored to your schedule, your dietary needs/preferences when you’re starting your Whole30.

We plan our meals for next week every Sunday. We have this handy chalk board in our dining room that we write our meal plan on every Sunday while making our grocery shopping list.

So this Sunday we sat down and planned our meals for the week with the fact in mind that we’re starting Whole30.

Don’t mind scallops + rice – that was for the last day before starting Whole30 πŸ™‚

Get yourself a chalk board and plan away!

{TWO} Prep

This is KEY. And I can’t stress that enough.

If you don’t prep your plan is so much easier to break. Imagine, you planned, shopped and didn’t prep. When that busy Monday morning comes and you realize you don’t have lunch prepped to take to work with you what’s the easiest way out? Yep, grab those non-compliant leftovers from the night before thinking “It’s ok, I’ll start tomorrow” – and that’s where you get off track, off the plan and off the Whole30 without even starting. Then comes the guilt…

Don’t let it happen. Meal prep.

Here’s what I prepped this weekend.

starting whole30

  • Veggie snack bags (celery, baby carrots, bell peppers),
  • Salmon cakes,
  • Roasted radishes (coat with olive oil, salt and pepper, roast for 20 minutes at 400Β°F)

starting whole30

  • Turkey Ginger Breakfast Patties,
  • Roasted pumpkin seeds,
  • Oven roasted sweet potato (roasted, peeled, cubed),
  • Hard boiled eggs,
  • Fruit snack bags (apples, grapes, dates, dried apricots).

I also made my own mayo πŸ™‚

whole30 final recap

That wasn’t hard at all. But see what happened on Monday morning:

Instead of reaching for cereal, we had breakfast patties with hard boiled eggs and avocado + some fresh strawberries for breakfast.

Even though we didn’t have lunches prepped it only took me a couple minutes to throw this lunch together since I had my salmon cakes, HB eggs and roasted radishes handy.

Plan + prep in action! πŸ™‚

  1. Great tips! I definitely agree that meal prepping is so important! Even when I’m not doing whole 30, I love it when I have meals prepped as it generally saves so much time πŸ™‚

  2. Lena, I couldn’t agree more about planning and prepping with ANY food choice lifestyle…let alone having dinner in general. My dad always says, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” I want your meals for the week, hope there’s room for one more at the table πŸ˜‰

  5. I’ve heard great things about Whole30! I would love to try this one day…I know even now I struggle with the meal planning and prepping each week. It makes a huge difference!

    • Janelle, I totally agree – it makes my life so much easier. Dinner, lunch and breakfast – with prepping in advance (even if it’s just chopping some veggies) it just all comes together a lot faster and easier.

  6. I really really need to make my own mayo! There is so much extra GUNK in the stuff at the stores, it aggravates me to NO END!

  7. I love that you’re sneaking it on the kids. They’ll never notice when they’re eating all the delicious food you’re making! I think having a partner makes it a lot easier, so that’s great that your hubby is doing it too.

I love your little chalkboard, such a cute idea!
