Lean Lena Lately: Personal Post

So… hello, friends 🙂

It’s been a while… I needed to take some time off this blog (well, “some time” being the entire month of January, to be precise) to get my life stuff all sorted out and to re-focus.

It’s been quite a long time since I posted anything personal on this blog as it has grown and become more of a resource website for instructors teaching TRX® and indoor cycling or Spinning®. Today’s post is personal. VERY personal. We’ll be back to our regular broadcasting after this one, but I do owe you this post so that you know what’s going on and where all this is going.

Here we go…

So, today’s story begins in October 2015 when I was let go from my 8-5 job due to “decline in business volume”. Long story short, I declined the offer to stay with the company in a different role and with the help and support of my amazing husband, decided to change careers. Or rather – switch careers and make fitness a full time gig rather than a part time hobby.

In January, 2016 I started working at Athena Warrior Fitness as a TRX® instructor.

We’re still working on filling up the classes and spreading the word, but I am EXTREMELY excited about the future with this place and the opportunities for us to work together! Ever since my transition into the fitness world, Megan and “Athena” have been an amazing, uplifting and supporting force – right up there next to my family in its strength.

What to expect: I will continue posting my TRX® class plans on this blog. I will do my best trying to stick with the schedule and keep the “TRX Thursday” series running. I currently have 8 TRX® classes/week total on my schedule – you’re guaranteed to have some fresh workouts being published on Lean Lena 🙂

I’m still teaching my indoor cycling classes and planning on sharing my detailed class profiles with you. Indoor cycling continues to be my biggest passion and the topic this blog mostly revolves around.

Spinning

What to expect: I now have a lot more time to devote to you, beginner indoor cycling instructors! It has always been my biggest passion to help you get started in the world of indoor cycling. With choosing to make fitness my career, I can devote much more of my time now to mentoring new instructors and running my Indoor Cycling Class Profile Review program. If you haven’t already, check out these two programs and book your spot today.

I have a lot of ideas and plans for this part of “Lean Lena”. Stay tuned and alert! 🙂

Rewinding back: shortly before I lost my job – I had enrolled in an RYT-200 (Registered Yoga Teacher) training program that started in September 2015.

Teaching the Teachers

Having a “stable” (or so I thought) job I was planning to become a yoga teacher over the course of 6 months with the payments for this education endeavor being spread over the same time. Month after I started I found myself unemployed with this commitment on hand – daunting and challenging financially, exciting and interesting in all other respects.

I started a GoFundMe campaign and a Etsy shop to raise money to complete my yoga teacher education. As I write this post, I am still $710 and 2 months away from becoming an RYT-200 and this training has literally and figuratively turned my world upside down!

I am so grateful for this group of people I learn alongside of, for everyone I’ve met on this adventure and every single person who donated money so far to help me get closer to this dream becoming true. THANK YOU. From the bottom of my heart.

I’ve started a TRX® Yoga Fusion class at my Y in January and it’s been incredible! I enjoy teaching it and getting ready for it so much, and have absolutely amazing students!

What to expect: do expect more yoga on this blog for sure. It’s always been a big part of my life, but learning how to teach it has transformed me and my practice. I’d love to share this experience with you. Right now the plan is to continue with my “Om Monday” series.

With all that happening, I don’t think I will be able to continue with Tasty Tuesdays. I will still post about healthy eating and share my recipes occasionally, but at this point I can’t commit to any sort of regular schedule with this topic.

So that’s it in a nut shell, my friends. Now you know why “Lean Lena” has changed the tag line to “Row. Spin. Flow.” 🙂

2016 is going to be a difficult, but very exciting year. I’m excited and a little scared at the same time. It’s a big leap I have taken and I’m still struggling in so many ways.

I want to thank you for supporting this blog and myself through your comments, downloads, purchases, donations and just kind words. I appreciate it very much!

  1. Congratulations on trying something new and taking on new challenges! I teach cycling and TRX, so this blog is very helpful to me. Thank you for being willing to share your knowledge. -Alison

  2. Good luck, Lena! A big leap indeed, but your passion will propel you to new heights. Focus on all the good you are generating in your classes and ultimately into the world…we all face these challenges. You have created a nice community for all of us to share ideas and grow as instructors. Thank you for all you do!

  3. WOW! what an amazing journey you are on and we have the honor of following you along the way. I teach all three formats and working on my 200 yoga teacher training as well. Just curious how you fuse TRX and yoga in to one class.

    • Hi Hally. TRX did a couple of workouts that fuse the two formats. Those sort of inspired my idea for the class. However, in my case it is not a “sweaty” workout. It is more of a class where students use the suspension trainer to enhance a pose and work on the groups of muscles for a certain pose. Example: I featured Chaturanga Dandasana. We worked on shoulder, core and quad exercises in TRX Suspension Trainer over the course of 4 classes (one group/class) plus practiced Chaturanga and I talked about the role each muscle group plays in this pose and what we’re doing to make it stronger and why.
I’m planning on posting a couple of my TRX Yoga Fusion class plans here on the blog in the future. Stay tuned 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by today!

  6. Hello LeanLena,

What an inspiring story! You are doing great, having a job which is also a passion is arguably one of the most scary but rewarding life choices we can make, in my opinion. It’s great to hear you had the courage and support to make it a reality, and a success no less.

I am a fortnight into a 6 month military deployment and i am thinking of “stepping up to the bike” as an amateur instructor, the gym here is reliant on volunteers. As a qualified teacher and spinner of 10 years I think i can do my bit for morale here, but sites like yours are totally brilliant and will help me a great deal. Thank you.

    • You’re most welcome, Ric! I’m glad my blog is helpful for you. Please, feel free to reach out with any questions. I’d be happy to help. Lena.

  7. Glad your short hiatus wasn’t due to any severe problems. Welcome back!
